Noah's Diabetes Travel Checklist
Handout from Tour Now & Then (Summer '07)
Medical:
-Average test strips per day X number of days traveling
-Average insulin per day X number of days traveling
-Average injection device pieces per day X number of days traveling
**Then bring extra of all of the above**
-Back up injection devices
-Monitor with logbook feature and spare battery
-Small, portable hypoglycemia supplies (Glucagon Kit, glucose tabs)
-Diabetes ID and paperwork from a doctor
-Foreign medical resource information
-Frio pack or small refrigeration container
-Vaccinations on yellow vaccination card
-Basic First Aid Kit:
-Diarrhea medication
-Band-aids/dressings/steri-strips of different sizes
-Triple Antibiotic Ointment
-Iodine tablets for water (pumps don’t work in tropical bacteria areas)
-Advil and Tylenol
-Nausea medicine
-One ace-wrap bandage for sprains
-Other Medications (personal, malaria, vitamins)
General:
-Guidebook…but ONLY for ideas, not worshipping
-Passport and travel Visas
-with photocopies of passport and visa
-Image boosting documents: police, bank, doctor, school, and official letterheads
-Money hiding pouch or belt
-Bank card with withdrawal limit instead of Travelers Checks
-Phrasebook/dictionary with pictures that can be pointed at
-Appropriate clothes for climate
-Leatherman tool
-Small Sewing kit
Ideas:
-Minimalism in every sense
-Research a lot before departure (foreign food carbs, clinics, culture, etc.)
-Learn a language with your future adventures in mind
-Don’t put all diabetes supplies in one pack
-Solid hypoglycemia supplies weigh less than sugary liquids (candy vs. juice)
-Get activity and resting times in sync immediately in a new time zone
-Do basic exercises and stretches while commuting: core muscles, legs and arms
-The best and most valuable experiences are not found in guidebooks
-Embrace inevitable new experiences and change
-Be a good ambassador for America and diabetes
